Why Did My Pig Lose All Of Its Hair?
Potbellied pigs can lose their hair once a year. This process is called "Blowing
their Coats". Even though many pet pigs lose their hair, some never do, or they
may not do it on a yearly basis. Most hair loss is caused by stress in the pig’s
environment or a dramatic change in temperature. Many pig lose their hair in
the summer when it is hot, but there are those who do it just before winter
arrives. Potbellies have been known to blow their coats when they have been put under stressful conditions, like a family death, remodeling the home, the
addition of new family members, or moving.
When a pig starts to shed, it is normal for them to shed all their hair in a short
period of time. Most become completely hairless by the end of the process. It
takes several months for their hair to completely grow back. But when it does it
usually looks better than the hair they lost.
