A method of determining that your pig is in good body condition, not too fat and
not too skinny, is to place you fingers on your pig’s
back at its hip bones and press down gently. You
should be able to feel a layer of muscle between
your fingers and its hipbone. You should never
have to search for your pig’s hipbones under a fat
layer.
You should never be able to see its bones through
the skin. Also, the fat around your pig’s eyes should not be so abundant that you
cannot see its eyes. The pig should be able to have clear vision, even if it has
small eyes. Your pig’s nutritional needs are directly tied to its emotional and 65
physical well-being. Remember too much and the wrong types of food can kill
or cripple your pet pig.
To obtain an estimated weight for your pet pig you can use this formula.
Measure the heart-girth of your pig by putting the tape measure right behind the
front legs. Multiply that measurement by itself, then multiple this total by the
length in inches of your pig. Divide that number by 400, and you will have an
estimated weight that is accurate to within three per cent of your pig’s actual
body weight.
