How Do I Administer Medicines To My Pig?

Most medicines come as tablet/capsule, powder, liquid, and injection. Tablets/capsules are somewhat easier to give to your pig. There are several methods of doing this. First method is to wrap the tablet/capsule in a food treat such as cheese or bread or you can also place it inside a small piece of fruit. In most cases your pig will eat it willingly. Some tablets are bitter and if your pig should chew the tablet, it may refuse to take the treat wrapped tablet. In this case crush the tablet ups and treat it as a powder.Powders can be offered in peanut butter and bread rollups, in applesauce and honey or in a cheese roll. All of these foods will help to disguise any bitter flavor in the powder.

Liquids can be placed right on top or mixed into of a small amount of food. If you use this method, make sure your pig gets the entire dose. It can be injected into fruit such as a grape. If the liquid is unpleasant tasting, then you may be forced to administer it with a syringe.

Injections are the most difficult to give to a pig. In most cases you will not be asked to give an injection. This is normally left up to the Veterinarian. Should it be necessary for you to give the injection, be sure your Vet approves your level of expertise prior to administering the shot.
